Job Hunting Mistakes That Can Hurt Your Resume
Job Hunting Mistakes That Can Hurt Your ResumeWhen it comes to resume writing, many people make a big mistake by focusing on the resume itself as the solution to their job-hunting woes. Although your resume can be an asset in getting you a job, using it in an ineffective way is sure to result in disaster. It's not a secret that most people don't bother to look at the resume of a potential candidate. Instead, they go straight to the employer's site and check out the first few pages - this is why they end up with nothing. In fact, using the resume and cover letter as the sole tool to land a job is a big mistake. It's also common for job seekers to overuse the same type of resume. They end up having a huge list of resumes - both from their past employers and even from various other sources. This allows them to keep track of what they're getting rid of in their inbox and does nothing to help them get more interviews. Many job seekers ignore their own strengths and talents and try to use the same one-size-fits-all approach as other candidates. Again, this is a problem because hiring managers and hiring teams like things to be a little more individualized. You should still be honest, but at the same time, you don't want to exaggerate or take credit for abilities that are really yours.Another big mistake that job seekers make is to make the resume too formal. Unless you've been to graduate school, have experience with a specific skill set, or have some other amazing skill, you shouldn't try to come across as a professional when you're just starting out. It will be clear to everyone that you haven't done your homework.Use an easy shortcut. A resume that says 'Diana is a fabulous writer,' without taking time to prove that statement is like saying you want to see a doctor before having surgery. To make a good impression, don't say that you're the best driver, the most experienced parent, or the best sports player.Your resume is supposed to highlight your skills and accompli shments, not to make your job application look perfect. A couple of key mistakes to avoid include putting keywords in your name and hyphenating your job duties. An easy way to fix these two mistakes is to add a comma to make the words read, 'Manager of Sales' instead of 'Managing Sales Manager.'These mistakes job seekers make are often fatal. While they're easy to correct, they should never be taken lightly. For a good resume, remember to avoid these things and your potential employers will be impressed.
